Bruce Beiderwell came to Writing Programs in 1985 after completing a Ph.D. at UCLA in the Department of English. Since then, he has taught composition courses at all levels as well as adult/continuing education courses for UCLA Extension (Bruce won extensions “Outstanding Instructor Award” in 1997). In recent years, his teaching has centered on reading and writing difficulties students new to the university face. As an outgrowth of this work, he developed the Writing Programs’ Summer Writer’s Workshop for High School Students. From 2007-2017, Bruce served as director of UCLA Writing Programs.

Bruce’s Power and Punishment in Scott’s Novels (a book exploring the intersection of law and literature) appeared in 1993 and was nominated for a McVitie’s Prize. His teaching has led to The Literary Experience (2nd edition, Cengage 2016)—a textbook he co-authored with Jeffrey Wheeler.
